As the clock ticked away, Kate Austen, Scarlett Fey, and Sinthia Bee sat in their dorm room laughing hysterically. Their friend, Lucy, was curled up on the couch, her face buried in her hands as she tried to muffle her sobs. The girls had just finished a night out at the bar, and now they were faced with an assignment that was due tomorrow morning. The problem? Lucy had forgotten to take notes in class, and they were all counting on her to do the research.
"Lucy, come on," Scarlett pleaded, "we're all in this together. It's just one little assignment." Kate nodded in agreement, adding, "And it's not like we're asking you to do anything crazy."
Slowly, Lucy lifted her head and looked at them with tears in her eyes. "I'll do anything," she said, her voice shaking. "I don't want to fail out of college."
That was all Kate needed to hear. She pulled out her phone and started searching for the subject they needed information on. After a few minutes, she found what she was looking for. "Okay, here's the deal," she said, laying her phone on the table. "We need to research farting."
Scarlett and Sinthia exchanged nervous glances, but Lucy just stared at her blankly. "Farting?" she repeated, her voice cracking.
Kate nodded. "Yeah, farting. You know, passing gas." She looked at her watch. "We've got about an hour before we have to turn this in. So, let's get started."
Scarlett cleared her throat. "Lucy, do you have any experience with, uh, farting?" She knew it was a strange question, but she had to ask.
Lucy looked at her like she had lost her mind. "Of course I have!" she snapped. "Everyone farts!"
Sinthia bit her lip, trying not to giggle. "I mean, have you ever smelled a really bad one?" she asked, hoping to steer the conversation in a more productive direction.
Lucy thought for a moment. "Well, my brother is really gassy," she said, shuddering slightly at the memory. "But I don't think that's what we're supposed to be researching."
Kate nodded. "No, probably not. So, let's start with the science behind it. Why do people fart?"
"Because we eat food," Lucy said, rolling her eyes. "And some of it gets digested by bacteria in our gut, and that creates gas."
Scarlett nodded, impressed with Lucy's knowledge. "What about different types of food?" she asked. "Do some foods make you more gassy than others?"
Lucy shrugged. "I guess so. Beans are really famous for that, right?"
Kate laughed. "Yeah, but why do you think that is?"
"Because they're hard to digest?" Lucy guessed. "But that's not really important for our assignment, is it?"
Kate shook her head. "No, it's not. But I think it's interesting." She paused, thinking. "What about the social aspects of farting?"
Scarlett raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"Well, like, are there any social norms around it?" Kate asked. "Do people find it funny or embarrassing?"
Lucy thought for a moment. "It really depends on the situation," she said. "Sometimes people think it's hilarious, like when you're caught passing gas or something. But other times, it can be really embarrassing."
Sinthia nodded in agreement. "And what about using it as a form of bullying?" she asked. "Have you ever experienced that?"
Lucy gasped, her eyes widening. "Yes," she whispered. "All the time. When we were younger, my brother and I used to get teased for farting all the time. Kids can be really mean."
The room fell silent as they all thought about what Lucy had said. Kate reached over and put her hand on Lucy's shoulder. "I'm sorry you had to go through that," she said softly. "But we're not going to bully you. We're just trying to get through this assignment together."
After a few more minutes of discussion, they had everything they needed for their presentation. As they stood up to leave, Lucy looked at them gratefully. "Thank you," she said. "I don't know what I would have done without you guys."
Scarlett smiled. "It's okay, Lucy. We're all in this together." And with that, they all headed off to get some much-needed sleep before their big presentation.
