Kendra couldn't believe her ears as she heard the words echoing around the room. She felt her heart sink into her stomach, a mix of fear and anger coursing through her veins. It wasn't the first time she had felt this way, but it was definitely the worst. Her boyfriend, Alex, had just presented her with a box of chocolates on Valentine's Day. She knew he'd put in a lot of effort to choose them, but still, she felt disappointed.
As she sat on the couch next to him, she couldn't help but feel the tension between them growing thicker by the second. She watched as he reached into the box and pulled out one of the chocolates, his expression one of confusion mixed with anticipation. He must have seen the look on her face because he suddenly froze, his hand mid-air.
"I'm sorry," he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't mean it like that. I thought you'd like them."
Kendra didn't respond, unable to find the words to express how hurt she was. Instead, she stood up and walked over to the fireplace, her back turned to him. She could feel the heat of the flames on her skin, but it wasn't enough to warm her heart.
Suddenly, she felt a draft on her neck. She turned around to see Alex standing behind her, one hand on her shoulder. His face was a mixture of concern and sadness, but there was something else there too. It took her a moment to place it - he looked scared.
"What's wrong?" she asked, her voice quivering slightly.
He took a deep breath before answering, his hands shaking slightly as he spoke. "I'm going to show you what disappointment smells like," he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper this time.
Kendra felt her stomach drop. This wasn't the Alex she knew. He was normally so gentle, so caring. What had happened to him?
Alex reached into his pocket and pulled out a small bottle, handing it to her. Kendra took it hesitantly, her heart racing as she read the label: 'Cruel Valentine's Day Present'. Her eyes widened in shock as she suddenly realized what he was planning to do.
"No, Alex!" she yelled, dropping the bottle to the floor. "You can't do this!"
But it was too late. Before she could stop him, he picked up the bottle and squeezed some of the contents onto a tissue, holding it under her nose. She tried to resist, but the scent was overwhelming - it smelled like rotten eggs and sulfur, with a hint of something else she couldn't quite place.
She gagged, the smell making her want to vomit. Alex watched her, his expression unreadable. After what felt like an eternity, he removed the tissue from her nose and let her breathe in some fresh air.
Kendra collapsed onto the couch, her head spinning from the foul smell. Alex sat down next to her, his hand on her back, rubbing soothing circles. "I'm sorry, Kendra," he whispered. "I didn't know what else to do. I wanted you to know how much it hurts when you're disappointed in me."
She turned to face him, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Alex, I could never be disappointed in you," she said, her voice shaking. "You're my best friend, my soulmate. I was just having a bad day, that's all."
He looked at her, his expression softening. "I understand," he said, reaching over to wipe away her tears with his thumb. "But sometimes, the only way we can learn is through pain."
Kendra didn't know what to say to that. She knew he was right, but she couldn't help feeling angry and hurt. They sat in silence for a while, the only sound the crackling of the fire.
Finally, she looked up at him. "What are we going to do?" she asked, her voice tiny.
Alex smiled, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "Together," he replied, squeezing her hand. "We'll figure it out together."
And with that, they began their journey towards redemption, hand in hand, heart to heart.
